Train Cars
The Tom Thumb was created by Peter Cooper in 1830.
The rail-lines were originally going to be pulled by horses. The engine pulled
the first passage cars to Ellicott City. The engineers were amazed to see the
train going 10-14 miles an hour. The name was given later to the small size and
it weighed less than a ton. It was the first successful rail train in America.
In a race between a horse and the engine the engine was ahead till it broke
down and wasn’t used till the replica was made and put in the B&O Railroad
Museum.
Tom Thumb
In 1832, Phineas Davis and Israel Gartner created
the first Grasshopper train called the Atlantic. It was called a grasshopper
train because of its long vertical rods it had on the train. The original train
was scrapped in 1835.
Atlantic Train
In 1828 the first passage cars were made. They were
horse-drawn cars. They were pulled by the Engine “Tom Thumb” to Ellicott City. They
also were later used by train like the “Atlantic”.
